When the hunter-gatherers finally started settling down as farmers, infectious diseases started scourging them. The earlier humans could differentiate sporadic diseases like tooth decay, tumors, etc., from the infectious diseases that used to cause outbreaks and epidemics. The earliest comprehension of infectious diseases was primarily based on religious background and myths, but as human knowledge grew, the causes of these diseases were being probed. Similarly, the taxonomy of infectious diseases gradually changed from superstitious prospects, like influenza, signifying disease infliction due to the “influence of stars” to more scientific ones like tuberculosis derived from the word “tuberculum” meaning small swellings seen in postmortem human tissue specimens. From a historical perspective, we identified five categories for the basis of the microbial nomenclature, namely phenotypic characteristics of microbe, disease name, eponym, body site of isolation, and toponym. This review article explores the etymology of common infectious diseases and microorganisms’ nomenclature in a historical context.  相似文献

The interplay between immunity, inflammation, and metabolic changes is a growing field of research. Toll-like receptors and NOD-like receptors are families of innate immune receptors, and their role in the human immune response is well documented. Exciting new evidence is emerging with regard to their role in the regulation of metabolism and the activation of inflammatory pathways during the progression of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. The proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β appears to play a central role in these disorders. There is also evidence that metabolites such as NAD+ (acting via deacetylases such as SIRT1 and SIRT2) and succinate (which regulates hypoxia-inducible factor 1α) are signals that regulate innate immunity. In addition, the extracellular overproduction of metabolites such as uric acid and cholesterol crystals acts as a signal sensed by NLRP3, leading to the production of IL-1β. These observations cast new light on the role of metabolism during host defense and inflammation.  相似文献

Domesticated animals all over the world are subjected to a wide variety of environmental conditions and challenges. Any deviation from “normal”; may result in adaptive behavior of which changes in feed intake or feed intake pattern is by far the most important. Adaptive behavior may further include influences on passage rate of feed residues through the digestive tract, resulting in changes in digestibility. Adaptive behavior may also result in changes in heat production, either to maintain body temperature constant, or as a result of an elevated body temperature.

Important environmental challenges are infectious diseases. Mild (sub‐clinical) infections usually result in reduced performance, without affecting feed intake or digestibility. Severe infections may disrupt the barriers between the internal metabolism and the respiratory and/or digestive tract, resulting in severe losses of energy and protein. This situation is notably apparent in severe infections with parasites of the gastrointestinal tract and may be associated with severe protein losses. Feeding high protein diets may partly alleviate the negative effects.

Contamination of air, water and feed may occasionally cause problems in farm animals. Such contamination may include pathogenic microbes, toxic secondary fungal metabolites and heavy metals. Negative effects associated with such contamination often show an impaired reproductive efficiency, but their influence on the utilization of energy and nutrients is not well documented.  相似文献

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a risk to develop metabolic-chronic degenerative disease, it is important to find natural alternatives to help decrease the risk. Mexican oregano has a traditional use in Mexican food, moreover, has pharmacologic effects that can help to reduce risk the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of Mexican oregano ethanolic extract in metabolic syndrome in murine model.Ethanolic extract of Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) stem (Ext) had a favorable effect on biochemical markers in a murine model of MetS, induced by injection of monosodium glutamate (MSG). From newborn female mice, two groups were formed: control and the MSG groups, which received a dosage of 2 mg/kg of MSG via subcutaneous injection at the second and fourth postnatal day (PD 2,4), and 4 mg/kg at the PD 6, 8, 10 to induce obesity. On week 13, a part of the MSG group received Ext (group MSG + Ext) at 300 mg/kg, administered orally daily from week 13 to week 18. The results indicated that ethanolic extract of Lippia graveolens stem decreases the percentage of body fat, waist circumference, and body weight gain as well as cholesterol, serum triglyceride concentrations and systolic and diastolic pressure. Insulin and leptin hormone values showed a significant effect with the Ext administration. However, hepatic lipoperoxidation levels of MSG and MSG + Ext groups did not show any statistically significant differences between them, both being higher than the control group. Taking in consideration the results obtained in this study, it is concluded that the administration of Ext had a beneficial effect in the murine model with MetS. This is the first study demonstrating the potential of the polar fraction Lippia graveolens stem in MetS.  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different image reconstruction algorithms on topographic characteristics and diagnostic performance of the Parkinson’s disease related pattern (PDRP).MethodsFDG-PET brain scans of 20 Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients and 20 normal controls (NC) were reconstructed with six different algorithms in order to derive six versions of PDRP. Additional scans of 20 PD, 25 atypical parkinsonism (AP) patients and 20 NC subjects were used for validation. PDRP versions were compared by assessing differences in topographies, individual subject scores and correlations with patient’s clinical ratings. Discrimination of PD from NC and AP subjects was evaluated across cohorts.ResultsThe region weights of the six PDRPs highly correlated (R ≥ 0.991; p < 0.0001). All PDRPs’ expressions were significantly elevated in PD relative to NC and AP subjects (p < 0.0001) and correlated with clinical ratings (R ≥ 0.47; p < 0.05). Subject scores of the six PDRPs highly correlated within each of individual healthy and parkinsonian groups (R ≥ 0.972, p < 0.0001) and were consistent across the algorithms when using the same reconstruction methods in PDRP derivation and validation. However, when derivation and validation reconstruction algorithms differed, subject scores were notably lower compared to the reference PDRP, in all subject groups.ConclusionPDRP proves to be highly reproducible across FDG-PET image reconstruction algorithms in topography, ability to differentiate PD from NC and AP subjects and clinical correlation. When calculating PDRP scores in scans that have different reconstruction algorithms and imaging systems from those used for PDRP derivation, a calibration with NC subjects is advisable.  相似文献

The increasing availability of next generation sequencing techniques in recent decades has led to new discoveries, and sometimes the redefinition of conventional hypotheses, regarding many complex human-pathogen evolutionary relationships. These new discoveries are particularly poignant in studies of the Americas, where research into Indigenous ancestry and migration has historically been ignored. As a result, conventional hypotheses regarding the origin of global pathogens like tuberculosis, syphilis, and malaria in the Americas and their spread within the continents have been mischaracterized. Fortunately, recent studies using molecular techniques have now superseded these missteps, which were often based in anecdotal accounts from colonial missionary reports rather than rigorous scientific study. It is now clear that there was not a unidirectional pipeline of pathogen introduction that began with European contact; instead, a rich and varied microbiological landscape already existed in the Americas. This synthesis of research regarding the origin and spread of pathogens in the Americas examines the scope of this changing perception within the fields of paleogenomics and paleomicrobiology.  相似文献

ObjectiveThrough metabolomics method, the objective of the paper is to differentially screen serum metabolites of GDM patients and healthy pregnant women, to explore potential biomarkers of GDM and analyze related pathways, and to explain the potential mechanism and biological significance of GDM.MethodsThe serum samples from 30 GDM patients and 30 healthy pregnant women were selected to conduct non-targeted metabolomics study by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The differential metabolites between the two groups were searched and the metabolic pathway was analyzed by KEGG database.ResultsMultivariate statistical analysis found that serum metabolism in GDM patients was different significantly from healthy pregnant women, 36 differential metabolites and corresponding metabolic pathways were identified in serum, which involved several metabolic ways like, fatty acid metabolism, butyric acid metabolism, bile secretion, and amino acid metabolism.ConclusionThe discovery of these biomarkers provided a new theoretical basis and experimental basis for further study of the early diagnosis and pathogenesis of GDM. At the same time, LC-MS-based serum metabolomics methods also showed great application values in disease diagnosis and mechanism research.  相似文献

Phosphoinositides are a group of phospholipids whose inositol headgroups can be phosphorylated at three distinct positions thereby generating seven different isotypes. The conversion between these lipid species depends on the activity of specific sets of phosphoinositide kinases and phosphatases whose targeting and activity is critical to establish the landscape of phosphoinositides on the cytosol-facing hemi-membrane of all organelles and plasmalemma. Phosphoinositides play pleiotropic roles ranging from signalling and membrane trafficking to modulation of ion channels and survival. In neurons and neurosecretory cells, whose main function is to communicate through the release of neurotransmitter, most of the work has focused on the role played by phosphatidylinositol (4,5) bisphosphate in controlling the mechanism underpinning neurotransmitter release through the fusion of secretory vesicles with the plasmalemma. Emerging evidence supports a multi-faceted regulation of neuroexocytosis by 3-phosphorylated phosphoinositides. In this review, we summarise the molecular mechanism by which these lipids control exocytosis and how minute changes in their metabolism can have devastating effects in the nervous system and lead to neurodegeneration.  相似文献
